How Does Ginger Tea Help With Constipation?
Ginger is thought to help relieve constipation because it:
- Stimulates digestion
- Contains anti-inflammatory properties which can improve gut motility
- Contains dietary fiber, which can add bulk to stool
In addition, ginger tea contains a compound called gingerols which may help reduce gas and bloating associated with constipation.
What Is the Evidence?
There have been a few studies examining the effects of ginger on constipation. In a study of 28 adult patients with functional constipation, taking one gram of ginger extract per day significantly improved symptoms, including increased frequency of bowel movements.
In another study, ginger was also found to improve symptoms in infants with functional constipation, although in this case, a lower dose (0.25
