Though everyone has a different idea of what makes for the perfect glass of sweet tea, most recipes for 1 gallon of sweet tea begin with the same basics:
- 5-6 tea bags
- 1 gallon boiling water
- Sugar
How much sugar should be used for 1 gallon of sweet tea?
How Much Sugar?
Using an average of 16 teaspoons of sugar per gallon of sweet tea is a good starting point. However, this is an approximation, as everyone’s personal preferences will determine how sweet or unsweetened the finished tea should be. Also, dry ingredients like honey or agave can be used to sweeten the tea as well.
If you prefer a less sweet tea, cut the amount of sugar used in half. If you prefer a more intense sweetness, double the amount. It’s easy to adjust the sweetness to your own tastes.
Notes
Other additions, like lemon juice or mint, can be added to the tea, if desired. Also, depending on the type of tea used, the strength of the tea can be adjusted by varying the amount of time the tea bags are allowed to steep in the hot water.
In the end, how much sugar is used for 1 gallon of sweet tea is completely up to individual tastes. Experiment to find the perfect mix and enjoy!
