How to Harvest Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a fragrant and delicious herbal beverage that is made from dried flowers of several chamomile species. To make this healthful tea, you must first harvest the chamomile flowers, which is an easy and rewarding endeavor that anyone can do.

Prepare to Harvest

Before you start harvesting, there are a few items you will need to have on hand:

  • A pesticide-free, chamomile plant
  • Scissors
  • A basket, bag, or other container in which to collect the flowers

Harvesting the Flowers

When harvesting your chamomile flowers, you should wait until the blooms have opened fully before cutting them. Take your scissors and prune only the upper two-thirds of the flower heads, being careful to leave lower branches intact, as they will contain the unopened flowers that will open on subsequent days. Place the cut flower heads in the supplied container.

Drying and Storage

Once you have collected your chamomile flowers, lay them in a single layer on newspaper or other absorbent material in a well-ventilated space. After the flowers are dried, store them in an airtight container.

Enjoy your Chamomile Tea!

Now that you have harvested the flowers, you can now steep your tea. Place 1-2 teaspoons of the dried chamomile into an infuser and place into a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Sit back and enjoy the relaxing, soothing cup of chamomile tea!
