How to make Authentic Indian Masala Chai

Ingredients

 

    • 3 cups of water

 

    • 1 cup of milk

 

    • 2 tbsp black tea (such as Assam or Darjeeling)

 

    • 1 ½ – 2 teaspoons of grated fresh ginger

 

    • 2–3 cardamom pods, lightly crushed

 

    • 1–2 cloves

 

    • 3-4 peppercorns

 

    • 1 cinnamon stick

 

    • 2 tablespoons of sugar or honey

 

    • Freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)

 

 

Instructions

 

    1. Pour the water and milk into a medium-sized pot and bring to a boil.

 

    1. Once the pot boils, add the ginger, cardamom, cloves, peppercorns and cinnamon stick.

 

    1. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

 

    1. Add the tea leaves and simmer for additional 5 minutes.

 

    1. Add the sugar or honey, stir and simmer for an additional 2 minutes.

 

    1. Remove from heat and let steep for an additional 3 minutes.

 

    1. Strain the chai and add freshly squeezed lemon juice, if desired.

 

    1. Enjoy your authentic Masala Chai!
