How to Make Authentic Indian Masala Chai
Masala Chai is a traditional Indian spiced tea prepared with a fabulous blend of spices native to the Indian subcontinent. This delicious beverage can be enjoyed both hot or cold throughout the day. Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to make your own authentic Indian Masala Chai at home!
Ingredients
- Cardamom: 5-6 pods, Green or black
- Cloves: 5-6
- Cinnamon : 1/4 “stick
- Ginger: 1 inch of freshly grated or chopped ginger
- Milk: 2 cups of whole milk, almond milk, or coconut milk
- Assam or Darjeeling Tea: 2-3 tsp (about 4-5 tea bags)
- Sugar/Honey: according to taste
Instructions
- In a small pan, dry roast, the cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon for about 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
- Add freshly grated or chopped ginger to the pan and stir it around for 1-2 minutes.
- Add 2 cups of milk to the pan, and heat it until it simmers. Lower the heat and let the milk simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, and add the tea. Steep the tea in the hot milk for about 5 minutes. The tea will become darker in color.
- Strain the tea in a cup and add sugar or honey, according to your taste.
- Stir it well and enjoy your authentic Indian Masala Chai.
