How to Make Authentic Indian Masala Chai

Masala Chai is a traditional Indian spiced tea prepared with a fabulous blend of spices native to the Indian subcontinent. This delicious beverage can be enjoyed both hot or cold throughout the day. Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to make your own authentic Indian Masala Chai at home!

Ingredients

  • Cardamom: 5-6 pods, Green or black
  • Cloves: 5-6
  • Cinnamon : 1/4 “stick
  • Ginger: 1 inch of freshly grated or chopped ginger
  • Milk: 2 cups of whole milk, almond milk, or coconut milk
  • Assam or Darjeeling Tea: 2-3 tsp (about 4-5 tea bags)
  • Sugar/Honey: according to taste

Instructions

  • In a small pan, dry roast, the cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon for about 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
  • Add freshly grated or chopped ginger to the pan and stir it around for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add 2 cups of milk to the pan, and heat it until it simmers. Lower the heat and let the milk simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat, and add the tea. Steep the tea in the hot milk for about 5 minutes. The tea will become darker in color.
  • Strain the tea in a cup and add sugar or honey, according to your taste.
  • Stir it well and enjoy your authentic Indian Masala Chai.
