How to make Authentic Indian Masala Chai

Chai originated in India and quickly made its way around the world. Masala chai is a popular spiced version of tea, favoured by many for its distinctive flavour. Here is how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Water
  • 1 cup of Milk
  • 2 teaspoons of grated Ginger
  • 4 Green Cardamom pods (crushed or powdered)
  • 4-5 Cloves
  • 4-5 Black Peppercorns
  • 2 tablespoons of Sugar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of Tea Leaves (loose or bagged)

Instructions:

  • In a saucepan, bring the water and milk to a boil.
  • Once the mixture boils, add in the ginger, cardamom, cloves and peppercorns.
  • Allow the mixture to boil for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add in the sugar (optional).
  • Once the mixture has reached a rolling boil, add in the tea leaves.
  • Reduce the heat and let the tea simmer for about 7-8 minutes.
  • Strain the tea into cups and enjoy!

Once you have the basics of making masala chai down, you can experiment with different spices like cinnamon and star anise. You can also vary the ratio of milk and water and chose any type of tea leaves, such as black, green or white. Delicious and easy to make, Masala Chai is a favourite drink of many for its warming and inviting taste.
