How to Make Bubble Tea Pearls

Bubble tea is a popular, sweet and refreshing Taiwanese drink known as bubble milk tea, boba tea, or pearl milk tea. It includes various tea flavours, tapioca or fruit “pearls”, ice, and a dairy or non-dairy creamer, for a delicious treat. If you want your bubble tea experience to be even more special, you can add your own custom-made “pearls” for a unique flavour.

Making bubble tea pearls is a relatively simple process. Once you understand the basics, you can experiment with new flavours and texture combinations like a pro. Read on to learn all there is to know about making bubble tea pearls.

Ingredients and Materials

The following ingredients and materials will be needed to make your own bubble tea pearls:

  • ¾ cup of tapioca starch
  • Flavoured syrup (such as strawberry or mango)
  • A teaspoon
  • A pot
  • A spoon
  • 1 ½ cup of water
  • A stove

Step 1: Make the Tapioca Paste

Take your ¾ cup of tapioca starch and add it to your pot. Slowly pour in the 1 ½ cups of water while continuously stirring. The consistency should be creamy and paste-like.

Step 2: Add the Syrup and Stir

Once the mixture has reached a consistent paste-like texture, you can add the flavoured syrup. The more syrup you add, the sweeter your pearls will be. Start with around a teaspoon of syrup and add more if desired. Stir the mixture until everything is fully combined.

Step 3: Boil the Paste

Place your pot on the stove and slowly bring it to a boil. Lower the heat and continue to stir the mixture, making sure it does not stick to the bottom of the pot. As the mixture boils, the tapioca pearls will form and can be scooped up with the spoon.

Step 4: Place the Pearls in a Bowl

Once the pearls are scooped out, they can be placed in a bowl of cold water. This will stop the cooking process; leaving you with delicious, chewy bubble tea pearls. Enjoy!
