How to Make Tea Towels
Do-it-yourself projects are always a fun and satisfying experience. Making your own tea towels will save you money and allow you to customize the look of your kitchen. Here’s how to create your own tea towels from start to finish.
Materials Needed:
- Cotton fabric
- Thread
- Sewing Machine
- Fabric Scissors
- Measuring Tape
- Iron
1. Choose the Fabric
You can use any lightweight cotton fabric such as quilting cotton, muslin, or lightweight denim. The amount of fabric you need depends on the size of the tea towels you’re making. For example, if you’re making two 20-inch by 28-inch towels, you’ll need approximately 2/3 yard of fabric.
2. Cut the Fabric
Measure out the size of tea towels you want and cut two pieces of fabric the same size. Use the iron to press the fabric pieces so that the edges are crisp and straight.
3. Sew the Towels
Set up your sewing machine with a straight stitch and thread the machine with thread that matches the fabric. Sew around three sides of the towels, leaving a ¼-inch seam allowance. Do not sew the fourth side.
4. Sew the Hem
Fold the open edges of the towels over twice andpin in place. Sew a ¼-inch hem around the edges to finish them off.
5. Finishing Touches
Press the tea towels with an iron using the steam setting. Finally, finish the towels off by adding a decorative edge, if desired.
Making your own tea towels is a fun way to customize the look of your kitchen. With the right materials and a few simple tools, you can have your own unique tea towels in no time.
