What is TEAS Test?
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a standardized assessment program designed to evaluate the academic preparedness of students entering medical school or other allied health education programs. TEAS scores are used by many higher learning institutions across the United States to aid in the selection process for enrollment in related health care programs.
Overview
The TEAS program consists of five subtests:
- Reading: This portion assesses an individual’s mastery of comprehension, interpretation, critical analysis, and rhyme and word recognition.
- Mathematics:This subsection evaluates an applicant’s ability in mathematical competency, problem-solving, computation, data interpretations and more.
- Science: This section tests a student’s knowledge and ability in critical thinking skills, scientific inquiry, and problem-solving in the body of scientific knowledge.
- English and Language Usage: This subsection measures an individual’s command of standard English conventions in vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
- Anatomy and Physiology: This part evaluates a person’s knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body, along with associated anatomical and physiological terminology.
Scoring
Scores are based on a total of 170 multiple-choice questions that cover a wide variety of topics. A raw score is calculated for each of the five subtests, and the sum of the raw scores is then converted to the final score. Each of the individual subtests is weighted differently.
Purpose of Test
The purpose of the TEAS test is to measure and indicate to an admissions committee a student’s mastery of overall knowledge that is required in the first semester of a nursing or allied health program.
