What Is the TEAS Test For Nursing?
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is an admissions test used by a variety of nursing and allied health schools to assess the academic readiness of prospective nursing students. It is a multiple-choice exam that includes questions related to sciences, mathematics, reading comprehension, English and language usage. The test also focuses on anatomy and physiology, basic math skills and a few earth science topics.
Who Uses the TEAS Test?
The TEAS test is a popular assessment among post-secondary nursing and health science schools. It is the most widely used admissions test among nursing schools and is used by nursing programs in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The Test of Essential Academic Skills is published by the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI).
What Is Tested on the TEAS Test?
The TEAS test has four main subject areas:
- English and language usage: This section tests your ability to identify grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors, and to read for information. It also focuses on your knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structure.
- Reading comprehension: You’ll be tested on your ability to read and analyze the meaning of text. In this section, you’ll answer questions related to main and supporting ideas, author’s purpose, inferences and drawing conclusions.
- Mathematics: You’ll be tested on basic math skills such as measurement, decimals and fractions, and algebraic equations. You’ll also be tested on data interpretation and basic calculations.
- Science: You’ll be tested on science topics such as anatomy and physiology, basic chemistry and physics. You’ll also have to answer questions related to earth sciences, biology, and general science.
The TEAS test is a computer-based exam and generally takes about 3.5 hours to complete. The test is designed to measure your academic level and potential for success in a nursing education program. Nursing schools use the scores for course placement and to determine if a student has the necessary academic qualifications for acceptance into its program.
Good luck!
