First Records Of Tea
The earliest known records of tea date back to 2,737 BC and tell of the legendary Chinese Emperor Shennong drinking a cup of tea as a remedy for an ailment. Archaeological records reveal that during the Han Dynasty (206 BC- 220 AD), tea was widely consumed.
Tea In Ancient China
In ancient China, tea was sipped during ceremonies dedicated to ancestor worship and to the worship of gods. It was also taken as a health remedy for aid in digestion and for its stimulating effects. By the time of the Tang Dynasty (618- 907 AD), Buddhist monks began drinking tea for its stimulating effects, to remain awake and alert during their long hours of meditation.

In the 16th century, tea was introduced to Japan and quickly gained popularity. A few centuries later, it spread to Britain and many other Western countries.
